1. If you had to compare the character traits of the two sisters, what traits would you give Dee to describe her, and what traits would you give Maggie to describe her?
2. Is Mama responsible for the way Dee has grown into an adult, or is Dee responsible for her own actions and attitudes towards life and family?
3. Mama’s relatioinship with Maggie is totally different from her relationship with Dee. How are Mama and Maggie close? How are Mama and Dee distant from one another?
4. We talked about favoritism in our introduction to the story. How is Maggie ‘favored’ over Dee at the end of the story? Explain how you felt about Mama’s decision.

1. Do you think that Tom’s actions of going to get his paper illustrate fearlessness or insanity? Why?
2. Thinking about how things would be if he fell to his death Tom’s thinks, “… a wasted life.” Why do you think Tom feels this way?
3. How does being stuck outside his apartment for one hour cause Tom to have a greater appreciation for Clare?
4. Why do you think Tom laughs when the paper flies out of the window the second time? How does this reaction show a change in Tom when compared to his first reaction?
The first days of school are always exciting for me because I have new students, fresh ideas, and more ambition than the year before.
